Driver Steals UNILAG Lecturer’s ATM Card, Withdraws N2.7m

A driver, Mayowa Adenuga, has been arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly stealing his boss’ Automated Teller Machine card and withdrawing over N2.7m.

Also arrested were suspected accomplices in the crime – Adewale Opeyemi, 18, and Jeremiah Iyitoye, 29.

It was gathered that 25-year-old Adenuga, who is also a computer expert, was employed as a driver by a lecturer at UNILAG, Prof. Simbo Banjoko.

It was learnt that the suspect had driven Banjoko to the Bells University on the day of the incident. While waiting for his boss on the university premises, the driver found Banjoko’s Zenith Bank ATM card in the car and hid it.

Punch correspondent gathered that when the victim did not notice that his ATM card was missing, Adenuga used software to uncover the card’s PIN code.

After withdrawing N200,000 from the bank account through the ATM, he allegedly bought four iPhones, valued at N495,000; one Macbook laptop, valued at N415,000; 10 wristwatches, a Blackberry and a ring.

It was learnt that a total of N2,728,255 was withdrawn from the victim’s bank account.

The theft of the ATM card was said to have been referred to the Rapid Response Squad, which later transferred the case to the Anti-Vice Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.

A source said the prime suspect, Adenuga, perfected the crime by blocking his boss’ telephone line so that he would not see the alert of transactions conducted on his account.

He said, “The suspect is the lecturer’s driver. He is also a computer expert. He hid the ATM card for three days and when he saw that the man did not look for it, he used software to get the PIN. He called Adewale (Opeyemi) and handed over the card to him for safekeeping, saying it belonged to his sister.

“When he drove his boss out again at another time, he had access to the man’s phone and deliberately entered the wrong PUK number three times which led to the blockage of the line.”

Punch correspondent was told that having succeeded in blocking the line, the suspect contacted Opeyemi and linked him up with another friend, Iyitoye.

He allegedly asked the duo to make transactions with the card on his behalf.

The two men were said to have gone to Shoprite, Ikeja, and Mega Plaza, Victoria Island, where they withdrew N200,000 and purchased the iPhones, Macbook laptop, wristwatches and other items through POS transactions. It was gathered that the loot was shared among the three men.

A police source explained that Banjoko, who noticed that his telephone line had been blocked, took it to a telecoms centre, where it was reactivated.

“At that point, he received 30 alerts that a total of N2,728,255 had been withdrawn from his account. He reported the matter to the police, and the case was transferred to the RRS.

“When the matter got to the Anti-Vice Section of the SCIID, the police arrested the driver and after interrogation, he confessed to the crime and named his accomplices.

“The police recovered two iPhones 6S Plus, two iPhones SSE, one Macbook laptop, seven GT Shock wristwatches, one Blackberry Z10, one ring and two bags,” the source added.

The suspects were arraigned at the Yaba Magistrate’s Court on two counts of stealing.

The charge read in part, “That you, Mayowa Adenuga, Adewale Opeyemi and Jeremiah Iyitoye, on July 2, 2016, on Olanireti Fesan Street, Magodo, Isheri, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did steal the sum of N2,728,255 only, property of one Professor Simbo Banjoko.”

The police said the offence was punishable under sections 409 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Erinle, admitted them to bail in the sum of N800,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She added that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the defendants, who must be a landlord within the jurisdiction of the court.

The case was adjourned till October 17, 2016.

Melaye Urges Buhari To Sack Finance Minister, Minister Of Budget, Udoma & CBN Gov.

A member of the Senate representing Kogi-West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye, on Sunday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to take drastic measures on the ailing economic, including the immediate removal of the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun; Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udo Udoma; and the Governor of the Central bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele.

In a statement in Abuja, Melaye said the President must shake up his cabinet, and accused some members of cabinet as lacking the capacity to deliver on the mandates of their ministries and agencies.

He said Adeosun, Udoma and Emefiele should be axed for the economy to be effectively rebooted to deliver on the change agenda of the present administration.

Melaye said, “At the moment, it must be crystal clear to all discerning minds that the President’s widely-acclaimed magical body language has lost its presumed aura and efficacy. His no-nonsense demeanor is equally neither instilling fear nor commanding respect and loyalty from among his cabinet members.

“It is therefore obvious that the time for barking is over; now is the time to bite and boot out all those who have demonstrated, in the past several months, a crass lack of capacity to effectively carry out the functions of their office.”

The All Progressives Congress senator, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory, also condemned Buhari’s economic team led by Vice President Yemi Osibanjo, saying that “their decisions will not be and has never been respected by the economic managers and the bureaucracy in Nigeria.”

Melaye urged the President to, instead, constitute an ‘Emergency Ad Hoc Economic Team’ made up of all former ministers of finance, ex-ministers of budget and national planning, ex-CBN governors as well as members drawn from the academia with “deep knowledge of developmental economics to drive the economic revival programme.”

He said, “The President must immediately transit from mere rhetoric to drastic but positive action to save the economy and Nigeria from total collapse. The hunger in the land is real, pervasive, widespread and debilitating for the poor masses.

“As I walk the streets of my constituency these days, I constantly harbour a foreboding that I could be stoned by my angry constituents for the failure of Mr. President to fulfill his campaign promises and expectations to Nigerians.

“Nigeria is tottering on a dangerous precipice, sliding perilously to a certain catastrophe if the current economic malaise is not halted immediately.”

Robber Confesses How They Robbed 76-Year Old Woman Of N5.32m

One of the two-man robbery gang arrested by the operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) has confessed how they robbed a 76-year old woman of N5.32 million in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

The robbery suspect, Segun Taiwo said his ringleader, an herbalist, now at large masterminded the crime.

The suspect was apprehended after they had successfully dispossessed the 76-year old lady of her valuable at Oduduwa Street, Itire area of Lagos.

The duo had collected $10,000, £5,000, and N100,000 and a box containing assorted jewelry from their victim at about 8:00 p.m at the weekend.

Taiwo disclosed that he was only invited to the robbery by the herbalist, simply identified as Demola, who promised to give him 50 percent from the loot.

While explaining how they got clue before carrying out the operation, he explained:

“The mastermind is a herbalist. He was treating one of the woman’s daughter (name withheld) who had sore in her right foot. Whenever the lady visited him for treatment, he was always stylishly collecting information about her mother from her. Unknown to the lady, he had collected all necessary descriptions and information needed to perpetuate the robbery.”

“After a while, he told me that we have a special operation. He further told me that his patient (the woman’s daughter) must not be aware because we were going to their house to rob her mother”, he added.

The suspect also told investigators that the herbalist knew the exact time to strike, the description of the apartment, where the woman’s money and other valuables were kept following the information gotten from her daughter.

According to the suspect, “we carried out the robbery successfully. We gained entrance into the two-storey building and headed straight to the old woman’s flat. From our preliminary investigation, we got to know that the first flat opposite the entrance gate was theirs. We went straight inside the flat without any stress. We met the 76-year old woman while sitting on the prayer’s mat inside the living room. We dragged and threatened her with cutlass and axe to surrender all her belongings, including foreign currencies with her or else we will waste her life”.

The suspected robber said that the old woman cooperated with them and handed over a bag filled with both Nigeria and foreign currencies.

“We also forcefully collected her gold jewellery box. However, on our way out, we overheard the voice of the old woman who was crying and shouting for help. Unknown to us, RRS operatives who were patrolling the area have overheard her voice. As we were rushing out to escape from the house, the operatives sighted us and we took to our heels. Immediately, the policemen made a hot chase which led to my arrest and my accomplice managed to escape with the local and foreign currencies while the jewelry box was retrieved from me”, he revealed.

The suspect also disclosed that they had before now, robbed an innocent man along Okota road of his N200, 000.

My gang leader is a very powerful herbalist. He knows when you have money on you. The first day I followed him to rob was when we went to Okota road. On getting there, he saw one man along Okota road, and he pointed at the man and told me the man had money on him.

“We moved closer to the man and he recited some incantation, and to my surprise, that man handed over his money, about N200,000 to us. Out of that money, he gave me just N11, 000”, he added.
While confirming the arrest, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police, Dolapo Badmus, said that the command was making effort to arrest the gang leader, adding that the police would leave nothing to chance to nip crime in the bud in the state.

The suspect has been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) for further investigation.

Buhari Is Free To Contest In 2019- Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday said President Muhammadu Buhari is free to contest another election. Obasanjo spoke in reaction to a report that he has advised Buhari not to seek re-election.

Alex Nwokedi, the ex-president’s chief press secretary (CPS), was said to have made the comment on his behalf.

Describing the report as completely false and destructive, Obasanjo said the last time he communicated with Nwokedi was three years ago.

“My belief is that democracy allowed for anybody including President Buhari for that matter to contest any election and it is the prerogative rights of Nigerians to vote or not to vote for them,” read a statement issued on behalf of the ex-president by Kehinde Akinyemi, his media aide. Continue...

“I have not communicated with Alex in the last three years, so how a story could be credited to me, when I did not authorize such or communicate with him in the last three years? I condemn in the highest manner the story and those behind it. And for those behind it, they are simply enemies of democracy and freedom of expression.”

Alamieyeseigha’s N2.8b Hotel Rots Away In Abuja

Almost seven years after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) handed over the N2.8billion Chelsea Hotel to the government of Bayelsa State, the hitherto money-spinning edifice is rotting away in Abuja.

The hotel was seized from the state’s first civilian governor, the late Diepreye Alamieyeseigha. A Federal High Court, Lagos in 2007 ordered the forfeiture of the hotel by Alamieyeseigha after the ex-governor was sentenced for corruption.
Besides the hotel, the EFCC sold other Alamieyeseigha assets in Nigeria and realised N3, 128, 230, 294.83billion; $441,000; E7, 000 and £2,000.

The money was remitted to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in accordance with the law, for onward delivery to the state government as ordered by the court.
Former EFCC Chairman Mrs. Farida Waziri on September 7, 2009 handed over the hotel to ex-Governor Timipreye Sylva in Abuja. The thinking was that it would be a source of revenue for the state.

Seven years after the asset was returned to the state government, the hotel has become a haven for miscreants, men of the underworld, rodents and reptiles.
Shady activities are being perpetrated at the abandoned hotel, which poses danger to some shopping malls and banks in the Central Business District of Abuja.
Some of the miscreants have stripped the hotel of vital materials, which has no security.

An EFCC source, who spoke in confidence, said: “As at the time we handed over the hotel, in 2009, the asset was worth N2.8billion. We returned the hotel to Bayelsa State with another asset at No. 2 Marscibit Street, Off Aminu Kano Crescent Wuse II Abuja which was valued at N210million.

We took a step further by instructing Diya Fatimilehin and Co., former managers of the hotel to provide the state with detailed inventory of assets of the hotel.”
“It is unfortunate that nothing has been done in the last seven years. The land where the hotel is sited attracts either up to N800million to N1billion in Abuja. Yet the asset is allowed to lie fallow
“To the source, the fate of the once throwing hotel is a typical case of how the anti-graft war is being “frustrated and rendered meaningless”

“A former Chairman of EFCC, Mr. Nuhu Ribadu worked day and night to bring Alamieyeseigha to justice but the efforts have come to naught,” he said.
Asked if the EFCC can query the state government on why the hotel has been abandoned, the source said: “Well, there is not much we can do because we have done our best.

“The state’s funds were looted and used to buy the hotel; we traced the loot and recovered the assets. It is left to the state to live up to its pledge to make judicious use of the asset or sell it.
“We have been expecting a status report from Bayelsa State on how it has spent the recovered funds and the utilisation of the returned assets.”
