Kano State Gov. Umar Ganduje Frees 500 Prison Inmates, Pays Their Bail Fine In Spirit Of Ramadan

“Congestion in prisons is one of our major challenges in Nigeria. This often leads to outbreak of communicable disease while some inmates with minor crimes become hardened criminals as a result of interaction with superior criminals”, the governor lamented.

He further explained that the decision by the government to pay the fines and compensations, to free the inmates with minor crimes and who cannot pay as charged by courts, is part of effort to decongest the prisons, whose facilities are mostly obsolete and overstretched.

He promised that the freed inmates would undergo entrepreneurship training and be given grants to start economic ventures, so that they can fully integrate into the mainstream of the society

Meet David, A Boy Wrongly Diagnosed Of Ebola

When Save the Children found David Nyorkor in November 2014, he had been locked in his bedroom for six weeks.

It was at the height of the Ebola epidemic and Yenga, a small village along Sierra Leone’s eastern border with Guinea near the epicentre of the outbreak, was devastated.

David had contracted an unknown illness long before Ebola swept through the village and killed nine members of his family. But accurate information about the disease was scarce and superstition was rampant, so community leaders locked him in a bedroom in his empty family home, where he remained until Save the Children arrived.

“I tried to get out but I was never able, so I stayed in the room, in bed always,” remembers David, who is now 15 years old.

“Then Save the Children came to the village and asked for all the children who didn’t have parents,” David explains. “They took my name and after two days they brought me to Freetown. I was sick and saw no other way, so I was happy. I thought they would give me a new life.”

But, more than 18 months after he was rescued, David is back in the same community – only now, he is disabled.

A victim of a health system decimated by the Ebola epidemic and an overwhelmed international relief agency, David’s leg had been amputated – unnecessarily.

Convinced that the six weeks he had spent in isolation in his room in Yenga had ruled out any possibility that he may have had Ebola, Save the Children took David to Connaught Hospital in Freetown instead of to an Ebola treatment centre for observation.

The hospital had been overwhelmed for months by the city’s high rate of Ebola infections and, two weeks after he arrived, junior staff at the hospital went on strike following the deaths of three doctors to the disease in just two days.

By the end of the month, the diminished Connaught Hospital staff announced that they were unable to diagnose David’s condition. Large sores had developed on his left arm and right leg, and with the only pathologist in the country preoccupied with Ebola cases, hospital staff recommended that his leg be amputated before further observation.

Save the Children, fearing David’s life was in danger due to the spreading sores and delays in administrative processes, agreed. “At the beginning the process was out of our control because it required a lot of back and forth, getting consent from the family, getting doctors to do samples,” said one Save the Children employee who wished to remain anonymous.

“Doctors wanted permission to do laboratory analysis, and that took a lot of consulting and back and forth. Ultimately [the amputation] was a decision made at our country office.”

Fatima Sia, one of David’s aunts who had brought him meals while he was confined to his room, travelled with him to Freetown and provided consent for the operation.

Sia says that at the time she was under the impression that David’s illness had been identified and that amputation was the only treatment. It wasn’t until after David recovered from the operation that she realised he didn’t yet have a diagnosis.

Save the Children contracted an American social worker, Teresa Brooks, to handle the case. David met Brooks, a former case worker for the Nevada juvenile corrections system, in January 2015, following his amputation and release from hospital.

Save the Children arranged for David and Sia to live in a spare bedroom in a local family’s house while observation continued, and Brooks visited David several times a week to take him to his weekly check-up, deliver medication and assist him with physical therapy.

“Things only continued to get worse after his leg was amputated,” Brooks recalls. “What tests were available we ran. At one point we got a false-positive on a tuberculosis test and ended up treating him for that for the next six months without improvement.”

By December 2015, almost a year after his amputation, it was apparent that the tuberculosis diagnosis was incorrect, and David’s doctors recommended that his arm and other leg be amputated as well.

This time, however, those at Save the Children responsible for his case, weary of the previous misdiagnosis, did not consent to the amputations and arranged for samples from the sores on his body to be sent to a pathologist outside the country in order to identify his illness before taking any further action.

The results showed that David was suffering from a severe bacterial infection. He was treated and cured shortly after his diagnosis.

The source, who pleaded anonymity, said as soon as the suspect had poured the substance into the mouth of the boy that he began to foam and cried out hysterically, obviously in pain.

Surprisingly, the same suspect, who allegedly committed the act, was also said to have been the one that raised the alarm which attracted other members of the family, including the mother of the child. It was learnt that the family members were shocked at the strange occurrence and promptly made a distress call to the grandfather of the child, one Alhaji Mohammed Audu to come. And on arriving at the scene, the old man was said to have put his nose near the mouth of the boy and subsequently told the bewildered family members that he suspected that the boy might have been poisoned with ‘Otapiapia’ because that was the odour he perceived.

The Sunday Telegraph further learnt that in the midst of the confusion that engulfed the family as the boy was taken to the hospital, the suspect was said to have quietly escaped from the scene and ran to her father’s house in a nearby village, Gbedahan, in the same Bosso Local Government.

Nigerians Have To Be Patient With Buhari - Oshiomhole

Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole has pleaded with Nigerians to be patient with the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that it will take some time to fix the nation’s economy which according to him was battered by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for 16 years.

Oshiomhole made this appeal shortly after Lagos lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), hinted jokingly, while delivering a lecture at the 60th birthday celebration of the Secretary to the Edo state Government, Prof.Julius Ihonvbere, that he may soon embark on a probe to review the performance of President Buhari.

However, Oshiomhole who acknowledged the current difficulties being faced by Nigerians, asserted that the APC led government in the country is working round the clock to find solution to the problems.

We Arrest Boko Haram Insurgents On A Daily Basis In Lagos - Army

General officer commanding (GOC) 81 Div. of the Nigerian army in Lagos, Isidore Edet, on Sunday said the division arrests Boko Haram insurgents on a daily basis.

Edet said members of the sect who flee the superior power of the military in the north-east come to Lagos.

He made the assertion at the inter-denominational service organised to commemorate the Nigerian army celebration day at Saint Charles Lwanga Catholic Church, Ikeja cantonment.

“Almost on a daily basis, we arrest Boko Haram members that flee into Lagos just like they flee to other places,” he said.

“They have seen that the war is being won so they are running, so the army in conjunction with other security agencies arrest them almost on a daily basis.

“Initially they deny when we ask them questions, but when we probe further, they start revealing where they fought, how they killed soldiers, how they detonated bombs in post office, Maiduguri and so on.

“By this, we do what we need to do by sending them to the higher authorities to do what the laws and the constitution of Nigeria says it will do with them.”

Edet said the officers and soldiers in the army should be thankful to God for witnessing another army celebration day, adding that many colleagues had died during the fight against Boko Haram insurgents.

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has told the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop chasing shadows on the June 21, 2014 governorship election in the State and wait for 2018, saying;

“writing over 100 petitions to the office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on an election conducted two years ago and was adjudged as free, fair and credible even by the international community, including the United States of America government is a demonstration of the APC desperation to throw Ekiti State into chaos just because the party lost power.”

Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to thegovernor, Lere Olayinka, in a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Sunday, wondered how many petitions should have been written against the Presidential Election if APC could write over 100 petitions against an election held in just 16 out of the 774 Local Councils in the country.”
