Man Sets Wife Ablaze Over Disagreement

The Police has arrested a middle-aged man simply identified as Onya, in Benin, Edo State for allegedly setting his wife, Margaret Onya, ablaze after a disagreement.

The incident occurred at 35, JB street, Ekosodin quarters, off Ugbowo-Lagos Road, Benin City.‎ The man was alleged to have poured petrol on his wife and set her ablaze with a match stick.

Margaret who suffered severe burns from the incident is now being treated at a private medical facility in Benin City.

Federal Government Bars States From Bank Loans

The Federal Government of Nigeria has barred banks in the country from giving loans to state governments.

The decision was taken in line with the Fiscal Sustainability Plan, FSP, which has been agreed to by the Federal Government’s economic team and state governors, to ensure prudent management of sub-national resources.

Finance Ministry sources said,  the Government was disappointed at the manner some past and current governors took loans from banks and misapplied such funds, while mortgaging their states’ finances.
This comes as the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, will today announce details of the much anticipated ‘flexible’ foreign exchange rate policy.

Teen Fatally Shoots Girlfriend For Breaking Up With Him

A 'depressed' teenager has admitted murdering his girlfriend after she dumped him, before driving for five hours to dispose of her body.

Tanner Flores, of Larimer County, Colorado, was arrested Friday on suspicion of the murder of Ashley Doolittle, 18, after her body was discovered in Collbran.

She had been reported missing by her family the previous day after her car was found abandoned near Lon Hagler Reservoir in Larimer County - five hours away. Flores, 18, told police he'd murdered his ex-girlfriend because he'd been 'angry' that she'd ended their year-long relationship.

18 Lions On Trial For Man-Eating, They Face Life Sentence If Convicted

India forest officials “arrested” 18 lions on Monday, including one thought to be a man-eater involved in six deadly attacks near a sanctuary.

“We think we have pinpointed the guilty lion, but we are still awaiting the results of nine more animals,” said JA Khan, a forest official in the country, the BBC reported.

The guilty lion will be sentenced to living the remainder of its life at the zoo; the other lions will be released back into the wild.

Woman Arrested For Beating Husband To A Pulp For Farting

A woman in Zimbabwe, has been arrested and charged to court for allegedly beating her husband to a pulp as punishment for farting in bed, iMzanzi reports.

The victim, Fikile Nyamane, claimed that while he was asleep, his wife, Nompumelelo, used her elbow to give him a blow to the face and when he asked what he did to deserve that, she told him he was disturbing her with his persistent farting.He added that after he went back to sleep, his enraged wife sat on him and pummelled him till he almost lost consciousness.

Fikile said he fell out of bed and the fight continued, leaving him with deep scratches up to 20cm long across his chest.

He added that Mpumelelo hid in the bathroom and dispersed pepper-spray to keep him out of the room but he somehow managed to restrain his infuriated wife and called the police. The woman was arrested and charged with domestic battery.

Alligator Drags Toddler Into Water Near Disney World

A two-year-old child is reportedly missing after being dragged into the water by an alligator near a Disney World hotel in Orlando, authorities said.

The child was dragged into the Seven Seas Lagoon near the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa at around 9.30pm on Tuesday, Orange County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Rose Silva told theOrlando Sentinel.

Silva says the child has not been found, adding that deputies are continuing to searching the lagoon. She did not confirm the gender of the child, but some reports said it was a boy.

He said that there was a 'movie night' on the beach on Tuesday night, which is where the alligator may have attacked the toddler before dragging the child into the lagoon.

EFCC Raid Obanikoro’s Lagos Homes, Media Aide Confirms

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) today stormed the Lagos residences of former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, carting away cars and other valuables.

The two homes raided were the former minister’s private residence at Park View Estate and the house near Banana Island where his two sons, Jide and Gbolahan live with their families.

The Nation learnt that the officials, who stormed the two houses in the afternoon, were there till about 6:00pm.

According to Obanikoro’s media aide, Jonathan Eze, the officials took vehicles, wristwatches and other personal effects of the former minister and his sons, who are all in the United States.

AIT Sacks All Workers In Edo Station

After workers protested non payment of salaries three weeks ago,  the management of the African Independent Television (AIT) today relieved all the workers of its station in Benin City of their appointments with immediate effect.

The management’s decision was made known in a letter signed by Mr Victor Okasoga, Senior Manager in charge of Human Resources.

In the letter to the affected staff, Okasoga said their appointments have been terminated with effect from June 13 2016.  The letter directed those affected to handover all company properties in, “your possession especially your identity cards to the Head of Center.”


“Failure to surrender company properties in your possession may delay the processing of your entitlements,”the letter added.

The workers had protested the non payment of their salaries which was running into two years.

Sometime in April, I ran into my very good friend Sarumi Ademiluyi, an industry plugger and artiste manager. The last I remember, he was OJB’s manager, so I asked ‘How far bro, how Baba (OJB)’. He replied saying, ‘Baba dey ok o. We dey even plan to do him 50th birthday in July’.

Immediately I said to him, ‘Bro you know I have to be the one to get his 50th birthday exclusive interview’, and he was like, ‘Sure na, you be my oga na (laughs)’.
So we agreed to meet up over the weekend and set up a meet with OJB.

The meeting didn’t hold, but we spoke on phone a couple of times and Ade was like, ‘I don brief Baba about the interview, so you can call him to see him’.
I called OJB myself. He didn’t pick up the first day, so I gave it time and called a couple of days after. He did pick up and went: ‘Dayo, bawo ni’.
I told him why I called and he said no problem, ‘you can come to the house on Sunday.

So on Sunday, June 12, 2016 I headed to OJB’s house on Gbaja Street in Surulere Lagos. I got there about an hour late because Ikorodu Road was a mess traffic-wise.

I met OJB in his parlour. He laid on a bed right in the centre of the living room with his kids around him. OJB looked frail and was a shadow of his old bubbly self. He welcomed me, we chatted a little about his plan for the birthday and when we were about to start the interview, he sent his kids inside.
His last child, Emmanuella was a little relunctant, so OJB had her take off his jacket and sent her inside with it.

His first words were, ‘What most people don’t know about me is that I am very unassuming and I pray a lot’.

This Delta State born entertainer was one of the founding fathers contemporary Nigerian music and pop culture.

Rapper Lil Wayne Suffers Another Seizure

KMTV reports Lil Wayne is now in stable condition after suffering two seizures yesterday, a representative for the Young Money rapper disclosed this morning.

This is the fourth high-profile seizure the rapper has suffered in the past four years, dating back to October 2012. Wayne, who admitted in 2013 that he suffers from epilepsy and is "prone to seizures," has said that he suffers seizures due to stress, lack of rest and overworking himself.

A French man, Guirec Soudée, is travelling around the world with a chicken named Monique.

He told the BBC, he met Monique when she was just four or five months old and had "never left the Canary Islands. I didn't speak any Spanish and she didn't speak any French, but we got along."

Students Apppear In Church Garments In Osun

Some students of Baptist High School, Adeeke, Iwo caused a stir among their colleagues as they appeared in the school in choir robes and other church garments.

A Punch Newspaper correspondent, who visited the school observed that the students came late to the school around 8:35 on Tuesday and headed to their various classes as their colleagues hailed them for their courage.
Many female Muslim students of the school wore hijab on their uniforms and some members of the Christian Association of Nigeria are in the school to monitor the reaction of the teachers to the mode of dressing of their children.

Earlier, Justice Jide Falola of the Osun State High Court had on June 3 given a verdict that Muslim students should be allowed to wear hijab in all public schools in the state because it was part of their fundamental rights.
The CAN had held an emergency meeting  following the judgment and threatened that it would direct Christian pupils to start wearing choir robes and other religious garments to schools should the state government implement the judgment.

Charles Nengite, beat 380 other post-graduate students to the top position at the  (USAWC), Carlisle, Pennsylvania.The information is obtained from the college website, posted on Monday.Nengite’s performance was the best by any foreigner in the 38-year history of the college, the information added.
In one of several letters conveying his choice for the various awards, the Commandant of the college, Maj.-Gen. William Rapp, described Nengite’s performance as “arguably one of the best in the international fellows programmes at the USAWC.”

Rapp also said at the graduation ceremony of the college that Nigeria should be proud of Nengite and his compatriot in the Masters of Strategic Studies class, Col. Timothy Shipi.

EFCC Set To Arraign Fani Kayode, Another Ex-Minister

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is set to arraign a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode; a former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman; a firm, Joint Trust Dimensions Limited; and one Jimoh Yusuf for an alleged N1.5bn fraud.

The anti-graft commission will on Wednesday arraign a former Senior Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Waripamowei Dudafa, for an alleged N1.6bn fraud.

An impeccable source at the anti-graft agency told Punch that Fani-Kayode, Usman and Yusuf would be charged with 17 counts bordering on money laundering and fraud.

The source added, “We have filed charges against Fani-Kayode, Usman, Yusuf and a company, Joint Trust Dimensions Limited. Yusuf was the signatory to the account of Joint Trust Dimensions Limited. They will be arraigned before a Federal High Court in Lagos this week.”

Suspected rapist who allegedly terrorizes communities and recently raped and murdered a 27-year-old Ghanaian, Grace Obinna, at Ibeshe in Ikorodu area of Lagos State, almost lost his life yesterday.

Student, Residents Narrate How Policemen In Ikorodu Jump On Their Roads To Arrest Them For No Reason

Incase the Police IG or Police commissioner does not know this, this occurs often in Lagos. It’s not even a secret. When people that are meant to protect you turn around to be ‘terrors’. So sad.  
A Mass Communication student of the Lagos State Polytechnic, Taiwo Rasaq, has lamented that some policemen attached to the Owutu Police Division tortured and detained him unlawfully.

Rasaq claimed that the only “crime” he committed was demanding to know the reason for his arrest.

The victim, who was apprehended during a raid in the Agric area of Ikorodu, said he parted with N30,000 before he regained his freedom.


Punch Metro learnt that Rasaq was about to disembark from a tricycle when the policemen picked him up around 9.30pm on May 30. He said the policemen arrested 30 others and whisked them away to the station, adding that he was slapped several times when he requested to know his offence.

He said, “On May 30, around 9.30pm, I was coming from Egbeda in a tricycle. As I was about alighting at Ori-Okuta, in the Agric area, some policemen from the Owutu division arrested me. They arrested many people including those that went to buy bread and garri for dinner.

“When we got to the station, we met over 30 boys who had also been arrested like us. I demanded to know why I was arrested, but they did not answer. A few minutes after, they told me to remove my clothes and drop my belongings, but I refused.

“I told them I would not undress until I knew why I was arrested. I asked them to allow me make my statements and call my people. Three of them walked up to me and slapped me several times.

“One of them said, ‘You think you know the law, you will sleep in the cell tonight’.

“I kept telling them that I deserved to know my offence and if they couldn’t tell me, then it’s a kidnap. One of them slapped me again, while others manhandled me, so I kept quiet.”

Rasaq said the policemen allegedly collected between N5,000 and N10,000 from others, but he paid N30,000 for being ‘stubborn’ before he was released.

“We were over 70 that they arrested. They didn’t interrogate us or allow us to write any statement. The following morning, the bargain started from N10,000 and they threatened to move us to the Kirikiri Prisons. People begged and they agreed to take N5,000.

“My people begged them as well, they collected N30,000 from me for being stubborn.

Two other officers said they would not allow me go until I paid them another N1,000 privately, which I did. Though I couldn’t take pictures of the officers, I took their names and tags. They are: Odetunde Taofeek of Force Number 366967 and Iniobong Bassey of Force Number 023349,” he added.

Another victim, Yemi Ajayi, who resides in Igbo Olomu Junction, said he had attempted to explain to the policemen that a 15-year-old boy they arrested was his son’s friend, when he was beaten up and arrested.

He said, “I was in front of my wife’s shop around 9pm when the boy was shouting my name. I went to meet the police and told them who the boy was, but they did not listen. They hit me with the butt of their gun, fired tear gas canisters and threw me inside their van. The DPO was there too; he didn’t listen to me. It was my people that came to pay for my bail the next day and I was taken to a hospital. As I speak with you, I am still in pains.”

The Officer-in-Charge of the Nigeria Police Complaint Response Unit, CSP Abayomi Shogunle, said the raid was to rid Ikorodu of cult groups and violent attacks.

He said, “It is a week-long operation and it is in response to recent cult-related attacks in Ikorodu town. Some of the apprehended persons, found not to be linked to the ongoing investigation, have been released after initial screening, while 120 persons of interest arrested at different locations have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.”
